I got a call from a guy out in Santaluz, one of those quiet weekday mornings when the neighborhood is mostly empty. He was parked in his driveway and going nowhere. His only key to his 2004 Civic had snapped -- blade still stuck in the door lock from the night before when it apparently got forced in the cold. He had the broken piece in his hand when I pulled up.
First thing I did was get the broken blade out of the lock without damaging the cylinder. Then I decoded the lock so I could cut a new key blade to match. The mechanical side of these is old enough that it's reliable work -- nothing exotic about the cut.
After the blade was done, I connected to the OBD port, accessed the immobilizer, and ran the transponder learn sequence. Clean registration, no hiccups.
Then I tested. I started the car, let it idle for a full minute, shut it off, started it again. Did that three times. The two-second stall that comes from a poorly programmed transponder never showed up, which is what I'm looking for. Key turned, engine caught, stayed running.
He asked why I kept starting and stopping it. I told him a transponder problem doesn't always fail immediately -- sometimes it takes a second start or a third to expose a registration that didn't take cleanly. That third start is the one that catches the sneaky failures.
He hadn't even thought about going to the dealer. He just needed someone who could show up, and I was there in about 20 minutes.
