In Bayside, over near the street parking by the water, I got a call from a couple who had just moved to Imperial Beach a few months back. They bought their 2019 Civic used, came with one key, and never got around to getting a second one made. That one key had been showing hairline stress at the blade pivot for a while. They'd noticed it. Just never acted on it.
The morning I showed up, the blade had snapped clean off inside the door lock cylinder. The fob housing was in one hand. The blade tip was stuck in the lock. They had nothing that opened the car and nothing that started it.
The good news, which I told them right there on the sidewalk, was that the transponder chip inside the broken fob housing was almost certainly still intact. Plastic cracks. Chips don't usually care.
I extracted the blade fragment from the door cylinder first, then decoded the lock to get the cut spec. While I was doing that I popped the fob shell and confirmed the chip read clean. That meant I could work from what was already registered to the car rather than running a full all-keys-lost reset, which takes longer and costs more. I cut two new key blades on site, rebuilt the working fob into a fresh shell, and used the diagnostic port to register a second fob as a spare.
Tested both. Ignition, door handles, everything on the fob. Both worked.
They asked why the dealer hadn't just suggested this when they bought the car. I told them dealers rarely bring it up unprompted. Getting a spare made the same week you buy a used car is a habit that costs very little compared to the alternative. They were looking at their second working key like it was the smarter purchase they should have made two years ago.
The dealer quote they pulled up on the wife's phone while I was packing up was more than twice what they paid me. That part was almost an afterthought by then.
