I got a call from a guy near the Grossmont Center side of La Mesa. He had already been on hold with the dealer for a while, and by the time he reached me he had a pretty clear picture of what they wanted to charge him. His 2018 Civic was sitting in a parking lot. The key blade had snapped inside the ignition cylinder, and the piece left behind was too short to grip by hand.
The first locksmith he called told him the cylinder would need to be drilled and replaced. That is a real repair sometimes, but not the first move, and not when the wafers inside are still intact.
I got there with my extraction tools and worked the broken fragment out without touching the wafer surfaces. Once it was clear, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position directly. That gave me the exact cut depths I needed. I cut a new blade from the decode, then used my diagnostic equipment through the OBD port to register the transponder side of the key to the car.
The original cylinder stayed in the car. No drilling, no replacement parts beyond the key itself, no extra labor chase. The lock worked with the new key just like it did the day he bought the car.
He mentioned what the dealer had quoted him for their version of the job, which included a new cylinder and all the labor that goes with it. What I charged was a fraction of that number. He seemed less surprised by the savings than he was relieved to just be driving again.
