2010 Honda Civic Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in 4S Ranch, a warehouse stocker at the big-box store off Camino del Norte had a Civic key made by another locksmith. It worked fine for about a week. Then it started getting weird.
It would start the car in the morning without a problem. By the end of a long shift, he'd come back to the lot and get nothing. Sometimes it cranked and caught. Sometimes the dash threw a key-not-detected warning and that was the end of the conversation. He started leaving earlier to give himself a buffer in case it decided not to cooperate. That's not a solution, that's stress management.
He assumed there was something wrong with the car, maybe an electrical issue, because why would a brand-new key fail after a few days. He brought it to a shop, they found nothing wrong with the vehicle, and somebody eventually pointed him toward me.
I pulled the bad key apart first. The transponder chip inside was not the right type for this generation of Civic. It's a thing that happens when someone uses a close-enough blank from the wrong batch. The initial programming can pass, the car accepts it, you drive away, everyone's happy. Then the immobilizer runs its deeper verification over a few drive cycles and eventually the mismatch catches up. The key stops talking to the car reliably.
On top of that, the CR1616 inside was already reading low. So he had two separate problems feeding the same symptom. Swapping the battery alone would not have fixed it.
I programmed a new key with the correct transponder chip matched to his specific vehicle, cut the blade fresh, and swapped in a new CR1616. Walked every button. Started the car twice. Locked and unlocked from a distance.
He asked what it would have cost at the dealer. I told him to call and ask himself, because hearing the number is more useful than me telling him. He already knew it would have been a lot more, and he'd already burned time on a key that didn't work.
