1998 Toyota Camry
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my 1998 Camry to the dealer if I have no working key?

Not at all. A mobile locksmith can come to wherever the car is sitting, decode the lock, and cut a key on the spot. The dealer is not doing anything for a mechanical key that requires their facility. They have the same basic process: identify the cut, produce the key. The difference is you pay for their overhead and wait in their queue.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost job take on a 1998 Camry?

Usually 20 to 30 minutes, sometimes less. Because this vehicle uses a mechanical key with no electronic enrollment step, the job is entirely about decoding and cutting. There is no timed reset cycle, no software handshake, no waiting on modules. Show up, decode, cut, verify. That is it.

Q: My 1998 Camry key turns hard and sometimes sticks in the ignition. Do I need a new key or is it the ignition cylinder?

Could be either, but start with the key. A worn key blank that has been copied a generation or two from the original will have rounding on the cuts, and that slop adds up inside the cylinder wafers. If the key was copied from a copy, the tolerances drift further each time. Try your oldest key first.

Q: Can a locksmith cut a replacement key for my 1998 Camry from the VIN or do you need the car in person?

Sometimes the key code can be retrieved through legitimate locksmith data channels tied to the VIN, which allows cutting a key before we even see the car. That said, on a vehicle this age, the locks may have been re-keyed or replaced at some point in the past 27 years, meaning the VIN code and the actual lock may not match anymore. Decoding directly from the lock is the reliable method.

1998 Toyota Camry Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in South Poway called about a 1998 Camry that had been sitting in his driveway for about three months. His only key snapped off at the bow, right where the plastic meets the blade. Half the key was stuck in his door lock.

He had already tried two things: a magnet, which did nothing, and a claim from a hardware store employee that any Toyota key blank would work. He bought a blank, had it cut to what looked right, and it would not turn.

I drove out to him in South Poway. The broken piece came out of the lock with an extractor kit, no drama. From there I decoded the lock cylinder directly, got the correct cut depth sequence, and cut a new blade on site.

He watched the whole thing from his porch. When I handed him the key and it turned the ignition on the first try, he said it was the least exciting fix he had ever paid for. I told him that is the goal.

No tow, no dealer visit, no waiting a week for a parts order. Just a key that works, made where the car sits.

Toyota Camry Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 1998 Camry. Can you still make one?▼

Yes, and it is one of the simpler all-keys-lost situations we handle. The 1998 Camry uses a mechanical key, so there is no immobilizer reset, no transponder programming, and no computer involved. We decode the lock cylinder or pull the key code through other means, cut a new blade on site, and you are done. No tow required.
