A woman had a single key to her 2021 Toyota Camry. She had bought it used, always figured she would get a spare cut eventually, and never did. The fob housing had been cracking for a while, held together with habit more than plastic. Then the blade snapped. Half of it stayed in the door lock cylinder. She was standing in the parking lot holding the fob body in one hand and watching the other half disappear into the lock.
Zero working keys. Car she could not open. Nowhere to be.
I extracted the blade fragment from the cylinder first, which is its own small job when there is nothing to grip. Once the lock was clear, I decoded it and got the cut data I needed. The chip inside the cracked fob housing was still reading fine, which mattered. When you have even a damaged key to work from, the programming path is faster than starting completely from scratch with nothing. I was able to register the new fob to the immobilizer without a full all-keys-lost reset, which takes longer and costs more.
I cut two new key blades, rebuilt the working circuit board into a fresh shell, programmed both fobs on site, and walked every function: door lock, unlock, and the emergency blade on both units.
Forty minutes start to finish. She had two fully working keys instead of none, and the job cost her a fraction of what the dealer quoted when she called them earlier that morning. The dealer wanted her to tow the car in, which on top of their quote would have been a rough day. She drove herself to work instead.
