2018 Toyota Camry
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2018 Toyota Camry Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

It was a Tuesday night, around 9pm, and I got a call from a parking lot off Convoy Street in Kearny Mesa. Office park, mostly empty, one guy standing next to his 2018 Camry with his phone flashlight on.

His only key was gone. Not at home, not in the office, not on the sidewalk. Gone. He'd already walked the building twice. He didn't have his registration on him, didn't know his VIN, and was about two minutes away from calling a tow because he didn't know what else to do.

I slowed him down on the phone. Told him to look at the base of the windshield on the driver's side, right where the dash meets the glass. He found the VIN. Then I had him check his insurance app on his phone, which pulled up the registration info. That was enough. By the time he gave me the VIN I already knew the key type, had the right fob blank pulled, and was heading his way.

I got there, verified ownership, and did the whole job under the parking lot lights. All-keys-lost on this generation means the old key memory gets cleared first, then the new fob gets registered through the OBD port. The emergency blade gets cut to the vehicle. Everything gets tested: lock, unlock, the start button, door handle behavior. The Camry cranked clean on the first try.

He asked me what the dealer would have charged. I told him way more, and they were closed anyway.

The VIN is the single most useful thing you can give me before I arrive. Text it and I show up ready. That alone cuts the job time down noticeably.
