There's a park off Gum Tree Lane out in Buena Creek, Vista. A woman had her 2006 Camry sitting in the lot after a weekend morning with her kids. The fob had been acting up for about a week, she said. Lock button worked, unlock didn't. Then the unlock started working and the trunk button quit. Then everything quit except the panic.
That pattern tells me something pretty quickly. It's almost never the car's antenna when the failure cycles through buttons like that. It's usually the fob itself, sometimes a hairline crack in the circuit board from the key being twisted in a pocket or dropped on a hard floor. The CR2032 was reading low, too, so we started there.
Fresh battery seated clean, and the unlock came back. But the trunk button was still dead. I opened the shell and looked at the board. There was a small but visible separation at one of the button contact pads, exactly the kind of thing that happens when a fob lives at the bottom of a bag with a key ring levering against it for a few years.
The fix was a new replacement shell with a matching board, chip transferred over, battery seated correctly. Then the part that matters: I tested every button from across the lot, ran three consecutive starts to confirm the transponder registration hadn't shifted, and checked the trunk release from about 20 feet out.
She was surprised I didn't just hand it back after the first start. That testing loop at the end is where you actually find out if the job is done.
