2013 Toyota Camry Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out near Bancroft in Spring Valley, a guy called me from the shoulder of the road. His 2013 Camry, his main work car, had snapped a key in the ignition. Half the blade was stuck in the cylinder, the other half still in his hand.
He'd already called another locksmith before me. That locksmith quoted him for a full ignition replacement. The plan was to drill it out, pull the cylinder, put in a new assembly. The guy didn't want that. He wanted his car back the way it was.
I told him I'd take a look before anything got drilled.
The fragment wasn't deep. I used a proper Toyota-fit extraction tool, worked around the stuck piece without disturbing the wafers, and pulled it clean. Once the cylinder was clear, I decoded it from the wafer positions, cut a new blade to match, and registered the new key through the OBD port. The fob he already had was fine. This generation Camry separates the smart fob from the insert blade, so I only needed to deal with the metal and the chip. The fob stayed in his pocket the whole time.
The cylinder still works. The lock tumbles the same as it did before. No drill marks, no scratched door trim, no new parts bolted in. He kept his original hardware.
He mentioned what the other locksmith had quoted. The difference between "drill and replace" and "extract and decode" was significant. Sometimes the first approach a shop gives you over the phone is not the only approach.
