They have a parts counter, a service writer, a waiting room, and a building lease. I have a van and the same diagnostic tools. My price covers the key, the cut, the chip, and the programming. A renter at an apartment complex in Spring Valley called me after the dealer quoted him $449 for a replacement Smart Key on his 2013 Toyota Camry. He had one working key and wanted a spare before something happened to it. He figured the dealer price was just what Toyota keys cost.
I parked at his building and used my TOY43 Lishi to decode his door lock. The TOY43 Lishi is a pick and decode tool built for Toyota's standard keyway. It reads the wafer positions inside the lock so I can cut an exact blade without the original as a reference. His smart key, FCC ID HYQ14FBA, was a 4-button proximity fob. I cut the emergency blade and programmed the fob through OBD in about 35 minutes.
His total was $256. That covers the fob, the blade, the programming, and me coming to him. The dealer wanted $449 plus he would have needed to get the car there somehow. Same fob, same chip, same security handshake. Different price.
