1999 Toyota Camry
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

1999 Toyota Camry Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out near Brown Field Area on a Tuesday morning, parked in front of a residential street off Otay Mesa Road, when a woman flagged me down.

She had a 1999 Camry sitting in the driveway and had been using a single worn-down key for longer than she could remember. It finally gave out the night before, bent slightly in the ignition, and she had pulled it out carefully and set it on the kitchen counter like evidence.

She handed it to me and I could see immediately why it failed. Years of use had thinned the tip and rounded a couple of the cuts. The key still looked like a key, but the depths were off enough that the ignition had been fighting it for a while.

I decoded her door lock cylinder to get the correct cut depths, then cut a fresh key blade on the spot. Slid it into the ignition, smooth rotation, started right up. I cut a second one while I was at it so she had a spare.

She mentioned she had called the dealer first out of habit. They told her to bring it in. She would have needed a tow since the car would not start, and she was looking at waiting for an opening in the service schedule. Instead I was done in her driveway in about twenty minutes, and she had two working keys before I packed up.

That is the job on a 1999 Camry. No drama, no long wait. Just a well-cut key.
