Over in the Harbison Canyon area of Alpine, I got a call from a woman who had already been through one locksmith before she found me. Her 2005 Camry was starting in the morning, then refusing to start by evening. Sometimes it would crank and catch, run for a couple of seconds, then cut out like someone flipped a switch. She figured she had an electrical gremlin somewhere. The other locksmith had told her the key was programmed and she was good to go.

When a Toyota immobilizer rejects a key, it does not always do it immediately. The vehicle security system can pass a new key through initial registration but still run a deeper verification over the next several start cycles. A key with the wrong transponder chip can fool the first check. It will not fool the second or third. That is exactly what she was experiencing.
I read the chip in the key the other locksmith had cut. Wrong generation. The vehicle expects a specific chip type and what was in there did not match what the system wanted after the first handshake wore off. The remote portion of the job had been done correctly, which is why she could lock and unlock just fine. The ignition side was the problem.
I programmed a new key with the correct transponder chip, confirmed the remote pairing to the factory fob ID, and swapped the CR2032 while I was in there because the old one was reading low. Tested it through multiple start cycles before I packed up.
She saved a significant amount compared to the dealer route. More than that, she did not have to tow the car anywhere or wait two days for an appointment slot.
The difference between a key that works on day one and one that works for a week is whether the chip generation actually matches. I check that before I cut anything.
