2004 Toyota Camry
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I really need to tow my 2004 Camry to the dealer if I have no working key?

No. The 2004 Camry is exactly the kind of job that works well as a mobile call. The immobilizer system on this generation responds to professional aftermarket tools without requiring a dealer bay or factory software access. I bring everything to the vehicle. Towing adds cost and time before the key work even starts. Unless there's a separate mechanical problem keeping the car from moving, there's no reason to haul it anywhere.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost job take on a 2004 Camry?

On site, plan for about 30 to 45 minutes. The immobilizer reset on this generation has a built-in timing cycle that runs whether you're in a hurry or not, and that accounts for a chunk of the time. After that it's cutting the key blade and enrolling the transponder, then syncing the remote and testing every button plus a few ignition cycles to confirm everything held.

Q: My 2004 Camry starts fine but the remote stopped locking and unlocking. Do I need a whole new fob?

Not necessarily. On this generation Camry, the remote receiver module is separate from the immobilizer, so a dead remote doesn't mean the whole key system failed. Start with the CR2032, even if you think it's fine. A battery that still shows voltage under no load can still drop out when the fob tries to transmit. If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, the fob may need to be re-synced to the vehicle. That's a quick procedure with the right tools.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2004 Camry. Can I program it myself?

The remote portion on this generation has an onboard sync procedure that some owners have had luck with, but it requires a working, already-programmed key to initiate it. If you're starting with no working key at all, that method won't get you anywhere. The bigger thing to know: the remote and the transponder chip are separate.

2004 Toyota Camry Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Bressi Ranch, I got a call from a guy who'd been sitting on a half-working fob for longer than he wanted to admit. Lock button worked, unlock didn't. He'd tried two different batteries and figured the fob was just going bad.

When I got there he handed it to me and I could feel the case was slightly warped along the seam. Someone had pried it open at some point, probably for a battery swap, and the two halves weren't sitting flush. That gap puts uneven pressure on the circuit board and it doesn't take much to knock a button contact off alignment.

I opened it carefully on the hood of my van, reseated the board, made sure the rubber button pad was sitting flat, and closed the case without forcing it. Fresh CR2032 while I had it open anyway. Tested every button, locked and unlocked from across the driveway, and ran the ignition three times to confirm the transponder side was still doing its job.

His original fob, no new parts needed. The whole thing took maybe fifteen minutes once I was on site. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a replacement fob plus programming when he'd called them a few weeks earlier. I didn't argue with that. I just showed him it was working before I left.

Toyota Camry Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2004 Camry. Can you still make a new one?▼

Yes, and it's one of the more common calls for this generation of Toyota. All-keys-lost on a 2004 Camry means resetting the immobilizer so it forgets the old keys, then enrolling a fresh transponder chip and syncing the remote, all done on site. This era of Camry does not require dealer-only software or special credentialed access the way some newer vehicles do. The right professional tools handle it without a tow.
