I got a call from a guy parked near the library over in the Carlton Hills part of Santee. He had already been through the whole thing once.
Paid a locksmith to program a new fob for his 2009 Camry, watched the car start, shook the guy's hand, and then drove about four blocks before the engine died at a stop sign. After that, every start was the same: it would crank, fire up, and cut out in under two seconds.
The locksmith he'd used told him the problem was with the car's immobilizer module itself. Called it a hardware issue and moved on.
I connected through the OBD port and looked at what was actually in the system. The module was fine. What had happened was the registration sequence didn't complete fully. Toyota's immobilizer on this generation requires a specific back-and-forth security exchange, including a seed-and-key calculation, and there's a timed window involved. If you don't hold through the full process, the system writes a temporary entry that looks confirmed on the tool screen but never commits to permanent memory. Engine starts, immobilizer checks, finds no permanent match, shuts fuel down. Every time.
I cleared the incomplete registration, ran the full sequence clean from the beginning with all keys present, and watched the tool confirm permanent storage before I disconnected anything. Then I had him start the car himself, let it idle, and we both waited. No cutoff.
He already knew he'd spent money on the first attempt with nothing to show for it. I didn't make a big deal of the dealer comparison. What mattered was showing him the confirmation on the screen and watching the car run without cutting out. That screen is the difference between "I think it worked" and actually knowing.
