I got a call out to the Cedros Design District in Solana Beach on a Tuesday afternoon. A guy had walked out of one of the galleries over there and his 2020 Camry was sitting dead in the lot, fob totally unresponsive. He'd already done the battery swap at a hardware store nearby. Still nothing.
He wasn't panicking, just frustrated. He'd tried the fob against the start button like he'd read online and got no response. The dash was throwing a key-not-detected warning every time he tried.
I sat down with him and we opened the fob together. The CR2032 he'd put in was seated, but the positive contact had a slight upward bow from the original battery being pried out at an angle instead of popped. The contact wasn't making full pressure on the new cell. A couple minutes with the right tool to reset that contact, clean both sides, reseat the battery correctly, and the fob woke right back up.
We tested everything before I closed it: all four buttons, touch unlock on both front handles, and the start cycle. All good. The fob was fine. The lock was fine. The car was fine.
He mentioned the dealer had told him over the phone he'd probably need a new fob and a programming appointment the following week. That route would have meant leaving the car, arranging a ride, and coming back days later. Instead he was back inside the gallery in about twenty minutes.
I don't tell that story to knock the dealer. I tell it because a lot of calls that look like a dead fob are actually a contact issue, and that's worth ruling out on site before going further.
