2008 Toyota Camry
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Can you delete lost or stolen keys from my 2008 Camry so they no longer start it?

Yes, and if your keys were stolen rather than just misplaced, this matters. When new keys are programmed to the vehicle, the old registered fobs get wiped from the system. They won't start the car. The immobilizer only recognizes what's currently enrolled. We handle the erasure as part of the programming process. You don't have to ask separately. You leave with new keys that work and the old ones locked out.

Q: Does my 2008 Camry smart key have a hidden emergency blade inside it?

It does. There's a small release tab on the back of the fob. Press it, slide the blade out, and you've got a metal key that fits the driver's door cylinder. A lot of owners go years without knowing it's there. Once you're inside the car, don't assume you're stuck because the fob battery is dead. Hold the fob body directly against the start button and press the brake pedal.

Q: My 2008 Camry shows a key warning on the dash but the car still starts. What does that mean?

That's worth paying attention to before it gets worse. On this generation Camry, a key-not-detected warning that appears but still allows the engine to start usually points to a weakening fob battery or an intermittent connection inside the fob. The vehicle is catching the signal, but just barely. Left alone, the next step is the fob stops being recognized reliably and you get a no-start.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2008 Camry. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2008 Camry smart key system does not have a self-programming sequence you can run from the driver's seat. Registering a new fob to this vehicle takes diagnostic equipment that communicates with the immobilizer. There's no ignition-turn trick or button combination that adds a smart fob on this setup. If you already bought the fob, it's not wasted. Bring it to us or have us come to you.

2008 Toyota Camry Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked near Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach. He'd already been through it. Searched for a locksmith on his phone, clicked an ad, and a guy showed up for his 2008 Toyota Camry smart key. Phone quote was low. Final bill was not. The key they left him with worked intermittently on a good day.

He found EZ Car Keyz through Google Guaranteed and called asking one question: how do you know a locksmith is real before they show up.

I told him the same thing I tell everyone. Ask for the BSIS license number before they arrive. In California that's the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. A licensed locksmith has passed background checks, carries insurance, and operates as a registered business. You can look the number up on the state site in about thirty seconds. I gave him mine on the spot. He checked it while we talked.

When I got to him, I could see what the previous guy had done. The fob internals had been pried instead of opened cleanly, and the battery contact was bent just enough to make the CR1632 sit crooked. The prior tech had either not noticed or not cared.

I opened the fob on the hood, straightened the contact, reseated the battery, and tested all four buttons plus touch unlock on both front handles. Then I ran a full programming confirmation through my equipment to make sure the immobilizer and remote functions were both solid. Not a half-job.

Everything came back clean. The dealer had quoted him considerably more for the same work, with a wait and a tow to get there. He was back to a fully working key in his parking spot off Fletcher Cove, and he hadn't moved the car once.

Toyota Camry Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2008 Camry?▼

Mobile locksmith, not the dealer. Toyota dealer all-keys-lost quotes on a Camry smart key setup are not cheap, and most dealers need the car on their lot, which means a tow if it won't start. You could easily spend more on the tow alone than you want to spend on the whole job.
