Out in Rancho Santa Fe, at a home in The Crosby, I got a call from a woman who was visiting for the week. She had one fob for her 2025 Camry. That was it. And it stopped working.
She had already tried the obvious. New CR2450 from a pharmacy, correctly seated. Still nothing. The car was throwing a key-not-detected warning every time she touched the door handle, and the push-button start just sat there ignoring her. She tried holding the fob directly against the start button, which sometimes works as a backup when the battery is borderline. No response. She was stuck.

The problem was on the vehicle side. The smart key receiver wasn't recognizing the fob's registration, which can happen when there's a communication dropout and the system loses sync. This is something I've seen on newer Toyota platforms when a fob has been exposed to interference or the vehicle's security system gets into a locked state.
I connected my programming equipment to the OBD port, pulled up the vehicle's immobilizer data, and re-registered the existing fob to the car. The whole process took about 25 minutes. Walked all the door handles, tested touch unlock on both sides, confirmed the start button, tested the trunk release. Everything came back clean.
She didn't need a new fob. She needed the right equipment and someone who could come to her. The dealer route would have meant a tow, an overnight wait, and a bill she was already bracing for. She saved a good chunk, and she made it to her dinner reservation.
