La Conchita is a small strip of houses between the highway and the bluffs, right on the edge of Ventura. Not a lot of places to be stranded. A guy called me from there on a weeknight, said his remote had stopped working entirely and he was worried the key itself might be next.
He had the original key, still working in the ignition. The remote was the problem, a 3-button fob that had just gone silent. No lock, no unlock, nothing.
First thing I asked was whether he had tried a new battery. He had, he said, but he bought a CR2032 because that's what the hardware store had. Wrong cell. The CR2016 is noticeably thinner and a CR2032 sitting in that slot won't make a clean contact. It looks like it fits, but it doesn't seat right.
I drove out with the correct battery and my programming gear. Popped the remote open on the hood of my van. Swapped in the CR2016, cleaned the contacts, reseated everything. Tested it. Still nothing. Battery wasn't the whole story.
Reprogrammed the remote to the car on site. On these mid-90s Chrysler systems the procedure is done through the vehicle itself, and once it cycles through it either takes or it doesn't. It took. Lock, unlock, all three buttons confirmed working before I left the driveway.
He mentioned the dealer had told him they might need to order a part. I didn't need to order anything. I had what I needed in the van.
