Out near Lake Casitas Recreation Area in Ventura, a guy flagged me down on a call I almost didn't take because of the drive. His 1997 Chrysler LHS was sitting in the lot with half a key blade stuck in the driver door lock.
He'd been on a long haul, stopped to stretch, and the Y160 blade snapped clean when he turned it. Just stress and age. The first locksmith he called wanted to drill the cylinder, replace it, rekey everything. That is one way to do it. Not my way.
I used my Lishi Y160 pick to extract the broken fragment without touching the wafer surfaces inside the cylinder. Once the piece was out, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position directly. That gave me the exact bitting, no original key needed.
Cut a new Y160 blade on the van, then handled the transponder side. His LHS uses the SKIM system with a Philips PCF7935 chip. I pulled the SKIM PIN through the OBD port using my programmer and registered the new transponder to the module. The remote fob, his GQ43VT7T with the CR2016, was still working fine so I left it alone.
No drilling. No new cylinder. His original lock works with the new key like nothing happened. He sat on the tailgate watching the whole thing and just said, "That's it?" Yeah. That's it.
