Out on the stretch near Mussel Shoals, a guy pulled over on the shoulder because his key had snapped inside the door lock of his 1997 Chrysler LHS. The blade broke clean. He was calm about it, which I respected, but he had already called another locksmith who told him the cylinder needed to be drilled out and replaced entirely. I drove out and got a look at the lock. The broken fragment was seated but not spun deep, which was the good news. I used a Lishi extraction tool to work the piece out without touching the wafer surfaces. No scratching, no forcing. Once it was clear, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position directly, which gave me the exact cut profile for a new key. Cut the replacement on site, tested it in the door and the ignition. Worked exactly the way the original did before it snapped.
His cylinder was untouched. His lock looked the same as it did before I arrived. He kept his original hardware.
The other locksmith's plan would have changed his car permanently and cost considerably more. This one changed nothing except getting him back on the road.
