A guy working the warehouse shift at the big box store off Via Real in Carpinteria had a spare key made for his 2005 S2000 by another locksmith about a week earlier. It started the car fine at first. Then one evening, nothing. Engine cranked, green key light stayed on, car refused to fire.
He thought it was electrical. Fuel pump. Starter relay. The usual rabbit holes.
I pulled up and looked at the key first. Opened the head and found a 4D chip inside. Wrong chip entirely. The 2005 S2000 runs Honda's earlier immobilizer generation and needs a T5 transponder, sometimes also listed as an ID11 or ID13 equivalent depending on the cloning tool. A 4D chip can sometimes pass an initial registration but then fail Honda's secondary validation after a handful of drive cycles. That is exactly what happened here.
I read his ECU with my VVDI2, confirmed the immobilizer protocol, and cut a new key on a blank with the correct T5 glass chip. Programmed it to the car's immobilizer module right there in the parking lot. Green key light off on first turn. Engine caught and ran.
He had been calling around about towing to the dealer in Santa Barbara. Honda quoted him a wait of several days plus the key and programming fee on top of the tow. I was done in about 25 minutes on site for way less than that whole ordeal would have cost.
