I got a call from someone parked near Hueneme Beach on a Saturday morning. She had a 2009 Honda S2000 and a key that had already cost her money once.
A previous locksmith had cut and programmed a replacement, charged her for the full job, and left. The car would crank, catch, and then die about two seconds later. Every time. The other guy told her the car had a module problem and walked.
It didn't have a module problem. It had an incomplete programming job.
What happens when the immobilizer registration doesn't complete properly is exactly what she was seeing: the car starts because the ignition circuit is fine, but the security system cuts fuel almost immediately because the new key was never fully written to permanent memory. The system accepts the handshake temporarily during the learn sequence, but if you rush the timed steps or skip the confirmation, it doesn't hold. The car behaves like it recognized a stranger.
I decoded the blade first to confirm the mechanical cut was actually correct. It was, so I didn't need to recut. Then I connected through the OBD port, cleared the failed key data from the previous attempt, and ran a clean immobilizer registration from scratch with the full timed sequence. When it finished, I turned the key, let it idle, watched the tach settle, and waited. No cutoff. She watched the whole thing.
The dealer would have been a lot more. She'd already paid someone else too, which I couldn't undo. But at least she drove home.
