My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes. Broken key extraction is a standard call for me. I carry the extraction tools to pull the broken piece out of the cylinder without damaging it. Once it's out, I can decode the cut from the broken piece itself and make a new key on the spot. On the 2010 Forte, the ignition cylinder is replaceable if the extraction goes badly, but that's rarely needed. Most breaks happen at the bow, leaving enough blade in there to grab cleanly. After the extraction, the new key gets cut and the transponder gets programmed right there. You're not towing anything.

Question 2

What exactly is a transponder key, and does my 2010 Forte have one?

A transponder key is a metal key with a small electronic chip embedded in the plastic head. When you insert it and turn the ignition, the car's antenna ring around the cylinder reads the chip. If the signal matches what the immobilizer expects, the engine starts. If it doesn't match, or if there's no chip at all, the car cranks but won't fire.

The 2010 Forte uses this setup. The key blade does the mechanical job of turning the cylinder, and the chip does the electronic job of clearing the immobilizer. Both have to work. If the blade is damaged but the chip head is intact, I can sometimes transfer the chip into a new shell and save you money on the electronic side. If you need a full replacement, I cut and program it on site.

There are no remote buttons on this key. It is a turn-key, not a fob. Lock and unlock is done at the door.

Question 3

My Kia won't start and the dash is showing a key warning. What's going on?

First, try the obvious: a different key if you have one, and make sure the key is fully inserted before turning. On the 2010 Forte, the immobilizer reads the chip at the ignition collar, so a key that's not seated fully can fail the read.

If the dash is showing a key-not-detected warning and only one key is affected, the chip may have failed or the key may have lost its programming. Chips in older keys can crack internally from being dropped or bent, especially at the head where the plastic meets the bow. The key still turns, but the immobilizer never gets the signal it needs, so the engine cranks and dies or won't start at all.

If both keys fail at the same time, I'd look at the antenna ring or the immobilizer module before assuming both keys went bad simultaneously. That's a different diagnosis. Call me and I'll walk through it.

Question 4

I bought a replacement key online. Can I program it myself, or do I need a tool?

You need a tool. The 2010 Forte does not have a button-sequence or ignition-cycle self-programming method for the transponder. That kind of onboard relearn exists on some older domestic vehicles, but Kia's immobilizer on this generation requires the PIN to be entered through the OBD port with a compatible programmer. Without that step, the chip in your new key never gets registered and the car won't start.

So if you bought a key blank online, you saved money on the part, which is fine. You still need a locksmith or dealer to cut the blade and do the programming. Bring it along when you call me and I'll handle both.

Question 5

Can you make a key if I've lost all my keys for the 2010 Forte?

Yes. All-keys-lost is doable on this car. The process takes a bit longer than adding a spare because I have to pull the PIN from factory data, clear the existing key memory, and register the new key from scratch. On this generation, that runs through the OBD port with the right equipment.

The main thing to know: without a working key, the car has to be present and I need to verify ownership before I touch anything. Have your registration and ID ready. That's not me being difficult, that's California locksmith law and it protects you as much as it protects the next person. Once ownership is confirmed, I cut the blade and program the transponder on site. You drive away.
