2015 Kia Forte Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy up in the Santa Susana Knolls area called me about his 2015 Forte. He'd had a key made somewhere else a few weeks back and it had been giving him trouble ever since. Not a clean failure either. The car would start fine in the morning, then by the time he was heading home from his shift it would throw a key-not-detected warning and sit there.
He figured it was an electrical gremlin. Understandable. When a car starts sometimes and not others, your mind goes to wiring, grounds, modules. But the remote was still locking and unlocking the doors every time, which told me the fob itself was communicating. The issue was on the transponder side.
I pulled the key apart on the hood of my van. The transponder component inside the blade assembly was not the right one for this vehicle. On Kia flip keys from this generation, the transponder and the remote receiver work independently, but they both have to be right. A close-but-wrong transponder can pass a quick bench test and even start the car a few times before the vehicle's security system runs through enough drive cycles to catch it.
I programmed a fresh key with the correct transponder matched to his vehicle, confirmed the remote functions on all four buttons, and tested it through three start cycles on site. I also swapped his CR2032 while I was in there because the old one was reading low and there was no reason to leave a weak battery in a freshly programmed fob.
He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him I had no idea what they quoted the other locksmith, but I know what I saved him compared to a dealer visit, and it was a good chunk. More than the key itself.
