A warehouse stocker near the Hummingbird Trailhead in Simi Valley had a key another locksmith made for his 2015 Forte. It worked for about ten days, then started acting up. Mornings, push-to-start was fine. By evening, the dash would flash "Key is not detected" and refuse to crank.
He thought the car had an electrical issue. It didn't.
I pulled his flip key apart on the tailgate and ran the transponder through my VVDI2. The chip inside was a generic 46 clone, close enough to the Hitag2 PCF7936 that it passed the initial handshake and programmed in. But the Forte's immobilizer runs a rolling cryptographic check over multiple drive cycles. A close-but-wrong chip will clear the first few, then start failing once the deeper verification kicks in. That's exactly what happened.
His remote side, the OSLOKA-OKA870T with the 95430-A7400 board, was actually fine. Locks, unlock, trunk, panic, all four buttons worked. It was purely the transponder half failing. I also popped the CR2032 out and it was reading low, which was dragging down the fob's detection range on top of the chip problem.
New key, correct Hitag2 chip, fresh CR2032, programmed through the OBD port. That was months ago. Still working.
The difference between a key that lasts ten days and one that lasts years is the chip inside. That's it.
