Up near the Ventura Botanical Gardens, a guy with a 2020 Forte GT had zero keys. He'd lost his only fob somewhere on the trails and walked back to a car that would not even unlock, let alone start. Push-button start with no programmed fob nearby means the car is basically asleep. No dash lights, no chime, nothing.
He found my number after a couple calls to Kia dealers went nowhere fast. One wanted the car towed in. The other said three to five business days for the fob to arrive, plus a separate appointment after that.
I drove out and got to work in the parking area. All-keys-lost on these third-gen Fortes means going through OBD to talk to the smart key unit on the CAN bus. I used my Autel IM608 to pull the immobilizer data, clear the old fob registration, and start the new key pairing sequence. Backed up the EEPROM through my ACDP first, which is just a safety net in case anything hiccups during the AKL reset. Each new CQOFD00430 fob gets held near the start button during a timed countdown while the system writes it in.
Two fobs registered, emergency blades cut, every button tested on both doors and the trunk. He sat in the driver seat and hit the start button like he was waiting for it to argue with him. It didn't.
The whole thing took about 40 minutes in a trailhead parking lot, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted just for the tow.
