Out near Lost Canyons Golf Club in Simi Valley, a guy flagged me down in a parking area off the main road. His 2012 Forte was sitting there running rough for about two seconds, then dying. Every time. Crank, catch, stall.
He told me another locksmith had already come out and programmed a new smart key. Charged him full price. But the car kept killing itself right after start. The other tech told him the SMARTRA module was bad and left.
The module was fine. What happened was a textbook incomplete IMMO learn. On these second-gen Fortes, the immobilizer needs the 6-digit security PIN pulled from the system, then a full key registration sequence written to permanent memory through the SMARTRA and ECU handshake. If you rush it or drop out mid-process, the transponder data sits in temporary memory. The car cranks, sees the key for a second, then the ECU cuts fuel injection.
I ran my Lishi HY22 on the blade to verify the cut was clean. Connected my IM608 through the OBD port, cleared the old failed key data, pulled the PIN, and ran the full IMMO learn from scratch. Waited for the write confirmation on screen. All four buttons on the SY5HMFNA04 responded, push-button start was solid, and the immobilizer stayed quiet.
He had already paid someone else for a job that was never finished. I got it right on site for a fraction of what the dealer would have wanted, no tow truck involved.
