Out in Casitas Springs, I got a call from a guy who had bought his 2024 Forte used about eight months earlier. One key in the deal. He always figured he'd get a spare made eventually, and then eventually showed up all at once: one morning the fob just stopped being recognized. Car wouldn't unlock from the handle, start button sat dead, and he was standing in his driveway with a key-not-detected warning on the dash.
He had already done the right first step. Fresh battery, seated correctly. Still nothing.
I pulled up, and he handed me the fob looking a little defeated. I opened it up on the hood of my van and checked the contacts and the board. The battery terminal had a slight bend -- not dramatic, just enough to break reliable contact under vibration over time. I straightened it, cleaned both contact points, seated a new CR2032, and closed it back up.
Still not pairing.

I connected my diagnostic equipment to the OBD port, pulled up the vehicle security system, and re-registered the existing fob. Took about twenty minutes including the verification walk-around -- touch unlock on both front handles, all five buttons, start button.
Everything came back clean.
He asked about getting a spare made while I was already there. Smart move. Adding a second key while the system is open and a working key is already confirmed is the faster, less expensive path compared to coming back later under all-keys-lost conditions. He left with two working fobs and a better understanding of why "I'll get a spare eventually" is a gamble not worth taking.
