2017 Kia Forte
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my 2017 Forte to the dealer if I have no working keys?

No. A mobile locksmith with the right diagnostic equipment and credentials can do the all-keys-lost job wherever the car is sitting. Towing is a dealer workflow requirement, not a technical one. The 2017 Forte smart key system is accessible through the OBD port, so the car doesn't need to be in a service bay.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost job take on the 2017 Kia Forte?

On site, plan for roughly 45 to 60 minutes. The PIN retrieval and immobilizer reset have a process to them, and each fob has to be registered individually through the start button confirmation. It's not a fast button-press sequence. That said, it's a single session. You're not waiting on parts to be ordered or a service bay slot to open up. From the time I arrive to the time you're holding two working keys is usually under an hour.

Q: The start button on my 2017 Forte shows a key warning even though I'm holding the fob right over it. What's happening?

That key-not-detected warning on the start button is one of the more common complaints on this generation of Forte smart key. Before assuming the fob is failing, check three things: battery first (CR2032, and make sure it's seated flat with good contact), then check whether the warning is consistent or only happens sometimes. Intermittent detection usually points to the battery or a slightly bent contact inside the fob.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2017 Forte. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2017 Forte smart key system does not have an owner-accessible self-programming mode. There is no ignition sequence, button combination, or door-lock trick that will pair a new fob to the immobilizer. That type of onboard relearn exists on older vehicles with a basic bladed ignition key, not on this system. The fob you bought online is just hardware until someone with a proper diagnostic tool registers it to your car's security system.

2017 Kia Forte Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked off Tapo Street, finishing up a different job, when the call came in from Old Town Simi. Night shift ICU nurse, just off a long stretch of overnight hours, standing next to her 2017 Kia Forte in a hospital parking structure. She told me upfront she'd already looked up my BSIS license number before dialing. LCO#6792. She verified it on the state website. That stuck with me.

She explained why. A few months earlier she'd hired a locksmith who showed up with no marked vehicle, handed her a handwritten receipt with no company name on it, and whose phone number disconnected about a week after the job. She had no way to follow up, no record, nothing.

She wanted a spare smart key. Just a spare, no drama.

I pulled up, she watched the whole job. I connected through the OBD port, retrieved the security PIN by VIN through the proper channel, and registered the new fob to her vehicle's immobilizer. Each key confirmed against the start button. Then I walked every button on the new fob with her standing right there: lock, unlock, and the other two. All good.

The dealer had quoted her a number that made her pause long enough to start googling alternatives. She saved a good chunk coming to me, and she didn't have to leave her car anywhere or wait on a parts order.

Before I left she said she was going to text the license number to a coworker who'd been putting off a similar job. I'll take that as a solid review.

Kia Forte Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2017 Kia Forte. Can you still make a new one?▼

Yes, and this is a common call. All-keys-lost on the 2017 Forte smart key system is a job we handle on site. The process starts with retrieving a security PIN tied to your VIN through an authorized data channel. Without that PIN, the immobilizer won't accept new keys, period. Once I have it, I connect through the OBD port, clear the existing key memory, and register new fobs one at a time.
