My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes. Broken key extraction is a standard mobile job. We use specialized extraction tools to pull the broken piece out without disturbing the ignition cylinder. Once it's clear, we either cut a new key from your vehicle's lock data or decode it from the extracted piece on site.

One thing worth knowing on the 2013 Forte smart key: the fob has a physical blade that folds or detaches depending on the configuration. If the blade broke but the electronics in the fob body are still intact, we can often transfer the working internals into a fresh shell and blade. That skips a full replacement and saves you money. If the whole fob is damaged, we cut and program a new one from scratch, right there in the driveway.

The fob also has a mechanical blade built in for situations where the battery dies or the electronics fail. That blade lets you get in manually and, depending on the setup, may have a backup path to start the vehicle.

The key difference from a basic remote key is that the smart key and the ignition system are talking to each other constantly. That means replacing one isn't a cut-and-hand-you-the-key job. The new fob has to be registered through diagnostic equipment before the car recognizes it.

My Kia is showing a key-not-detected warning. What do I do?

Start with the CR2032. A weak battery is the most common reason that warning shows up, and it often presents as an on-and-off issue before it becomes constant. Pop the battery out, check the contacts for corrosion or any slight bend, and seat a fresh CR2032 clean.

If you have push-to-start, try holding the fob body directly against the start button while pressing the brake. Most Kia smart key systems have a low-power backup path built into the start button area for exactly this situation.

If a new battery and the backup method both fail, you're past the easy fix. At that point it's either the fob itself, the vehicle's antenna ring, or something in the security system that needs a proper diagnosis. I bought a fob online for my 2013 Forte. Can I program it myself at home?

No. There is no DIY programming sequence for the smart key on this vehicle. The online forum threads that describe button sequences and ignition-turn methods are for older bladed transponder setups, not the smart key system on your Forte. Those do not apply here.

Registering a new smart fob to a 2013 Forte requires a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port. The tool communicates with the vehicle's security system, walks through an enrollment sequence that has built-in timed steps, and writes the new fob's identity into the system. You can't replicate that with a button press.

The fob you bought online is likely a valid unregistered blank. That's actually the right part to have. You just need someone with the right equipment to finish the job, which is exactly what we do on site.

Do both fobs stop working if one gets damaged, or is each one independent?

Each registered fob works independently. If one fob stops functioning, the other stays active and the car won't know or care that the first one is gone.

Where it gets relevant is in an all-keys-lost situation. If you lose both and need new fobs made, the enrollment process wipes the old registrations and starts fresh. Any lost fobs that are still floating around out there get erased from the system at that point, which is actually the security benefit of the process.
