My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes. On Lexus models with a traditional ignition cylinder, we can extract the broken piece without damaging the lock. Once it is out, we pull the original key code from your door lock or vehicle records and cut a factory spec blade so you are not reusing a worn key. On push-button Lexus models, the emergency blade can snap in the door lock if forced. We remove the broken piece, decode the lock, and cut a new blade that matches exactly.

What is a smart key?

A smart key is the type of key your 2009 Lexus LX uses. It contains a programmed chip that communicates with your vehicle's immobilizer system to verify it is an authorized key before the engine will start. It also has 4 buttons for remote lock, unlock, and other functions. When a key breaks, the chip inside may still be functional, but the physical damage usually means a full replacement is the safest option to avoid getting stranded again.

First, try holding the fob directly against the start button and pressing. Your Lexus can power the transponder chip like an RFID tag even when the fob battery is completely dead, so this works indefinitely as long as the chip is healthy. If that gets the car started, replace the battery with a fresh name brand CR1632. If holding the fob to the button does not work, the issue may be the key itself or the vehicle's reception module. Some GX460 owners found that a software configuration setting had disabled smart key reception, and simply turning it back on fixed the problem without replacing anything.

What is the FCC ID for the 2009 Lexus LX key?

An LS430 owner reported the dealer quoting $1,500 for all-keys-lost versus a few hundred for a spare key when a working key was present. Locksmiths in the same area quoted $350 to $600 for the same AKL job. The gap between add-a-key and all-keys-lost is real, which is why we always recommend getting a spare made while you still have a working key.
