Out in Wagon Wheel, I got a call from a woman who had just bought her 2023 Lexus LX used. Came with one key. She had been meaning to get a spare cut for months, the way you mean to do a lot of things. Then the fob housing cracked along the seam, and when she tried to use the emergency blade for manual entry, it snapped off inside the door lock cylinder.
She was holding half a fob and had a blade fragment stuck in the door. Zero working keys.
First thing was the blade fragment. I extracted it from the cylinder without damaging the lock, then decoded the lock mechanically to get the cut data I needed. The transponder inside the cracked fob housing was still intact, so I was able to work with what was there rather than starting from scratch with a full all-keys-lost reset, which would have taken longer and cost her more.
I rebuilt her fob into a new housing with the original internals, cut two new blades to match, and went through the full verification: handle touch unlock on both doors, all four buttons, start button response, and the dash. Everything came back clean.
She went from no working keys to two in about 45 minutes. She asked what the dealer would have charged. I told her way more, especially since they would have required the car to be towed in. She just nodded. The spare key was the whole point of the call she never made for two years.
If your fob is cracked or damaged, bring it. The internals are often still good, and that changes the job entirely.
