2000 Lexus LX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and how does it work on the 2000 Lexus LX?

A remote head key combines the ignition key and the keyless entry remote into one piece. The key blade turns the ignition cylinder the same as any mechanical key. Built into the plastic head is a transponder chip that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer when you turn the key. There's also a small battery inside that powers the three remote buttons for locking and unlocking.

Q: What equipment do you use to program a key for the 2000 Lexus LX?

For this generation of Lexus, I use a professional OBD-based immobilizer programmer to register the transponder chip to the vehicle. If a key is being extracted or decoded from the lock, I use dedicated picking and decoding tools to read the cut non-destructively. The 2000 LX does not require the factory security-data access or secure-gateway credentials that newer vehicles demand, so the job moves quickly on site without waiting on dealer authorization.

Q: I have one working key for my 2000 Lexus LX. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I need one?

Make the spare now. All-keys-lost on a vehicle this age takes longer and costs more than adding a second key while a working one exists. With a working key present, the programming process is faster and simpler. Without any working key, the procedure is more involved. A broken or lost sole key also means you may need extraction or lock decoding before anything else can happen. Getting a spare cut and programmed while things are easy is the move.

Q: The remote buttons on my 2000 Lexus LX stopped working but the car still starts fine. What's going on?

Almost certainly the CR1616 battery. The remote and the transponder chip in this key run off separate power sources. The chip reads off the car's ignition ring, so it keeps working even when the fob battery is dead. The remote buttons have no backup, so when the CR1616 drains, lock and unlock just stop responding. Swap the CR1616 first. When you open the key head, check that the battery is seated flat and the contacts aren't bent or corroded.

2000 Lexus LX Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked near Surfers Point finishing up another call when the next one came in. A guy had pulled his 2000 Lexus LX off the road with a key that had snapped in the ignition. Half the blade was stuck in the cylinder, the other half was in his hand.

He was calm about it, which I appreciated. Some people spiral when this happens. He just wanted it handled.

I used a broken key extractor and worked through the cylinder carefully, keeping the wafer surfaces clean so I could still decode the lock when the fragment came out. Once I had the readings, I cut a fresh blade to match and verified the fit before anything else.

The remote head key on this LX is a single unit, so the fob portion he had in his hand was completely intact. The remote still worked. All I needed to do was transfer the programmed key head to the new blade and confirm the chip was communicating correctly. The car started on the first try.

From the time he called to when he pulled back onto the road, it was under an hour. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a multi-day wait just to get the car looked at, plus a tow. He saved a good chunk going the mobile route.

Lexus LX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

Three things. First, a real business name with verifiable Google and Yelp reviews. Scam operations cycle through dozens of phone numbers that route to the same call center. Second, ask for a firm estimate on the phone for your specific vehicle. Vague pricing or a refusal to give any number before arriving is a red flag. Third, ask for their California BSIS license number on the spot.
