My key broke in the door lock. Can you get it out and make a new one?

Yes. On the 2012 LX, the emergency insert blade lives inside the smart fob and is what you use on the door lock cylinder when the electronics aren't cooperating. If that blade snaps off inside the lock, forcing it is the wrong move -- it usually makes extraction harder. I remove the broken piece without pulling the lock apart, then decode the cut from the lock or from vehicle records and cut a new blade to match. The smart fob itself still needs to be re-registered if it was damaged in the process, but the extraction part is a standalone job we do on site.

What exactly is a smart key, and how is it different from a regular key?

A smart key is what the 2012 LX ships with. It communicates wirelessly with the vehicle's security system so the car can verify it's an authorized fob before allowing a start. The four buttons handle remote functions, and the system also reads the fob passively when you approach the door handles. There's no turning anything in the ignition -- the start button does that once the car confirms the fob is present and valid.

The key blade tucked inside the fob is there as a backup for the door lock only. It does not start the car on its own.

If that gets you started, a fresh CR1632 is your fix -- use a name-brand cell and make sure it seats flat against the contacts.

If holding the fob to the button does nothing, the issue is either the fob itself or something on the vehicle side. One thing worth checking: the 2012 LX has a smart key system setting that can be toggled off in the vehicle settings menu. A handful of owners have found that it got switched off accidentally, either by a passenger or during a valet situation, and turning it back on resolved everything without replacing any hardware. Worth a look before assuming the key is dead.

Either way, there is no button sequence or ignition trick that programs a smart key on this vehicle. That kind of self-programming only exists on older systems with a basic key in an ignition cylinder. This one needs the tools.
