She had been at a specialist's office near Las Positas in Santa Barbara, loading her elderly father into the car after an appointment. He was in a wheelchair. It was evening, the parking lot was mostly empty, and the LX just sat there not responding.

She had probably been noticing shorter range and chalked it up to the battery she had already swapped.
I replaced the fob with a fresh unit, programmed it to the vehicle through the OBD port, and tested every button, both doors, and the remote functions before I handed it back to her. Then she started the car, pulled out of the space, and drove her father home in his own seat without transferring him into anything else.
Forty-eight minutes from her call to the engine running. The dealer route would have meant a tow, a wait, and a whole different day.
