She had been at a specialist's office near Las Positas in Santa Barbara, loading her elderly father into the car after an appointment. He was in a wheelchair. It was evening, the parking lot was mostly empty, and the LX just sat there not responding.
She had pressed the fob buttons multiple times. Then she tried holding the fob closer to the door handle. Then she called me.
When I got there the car was locked, her father was still in the wheelchair next to it, and she was holding the fob like she was willing it to work. I got the door open with the mechanical override and checked the fob first, right there on the hood.
The CR1616 was not just low. There was a faint ring of corrosion on the positive contact tab, and the tab itself had a slight outward bow to it, enough to break consistent contact. The housing had been pried open at some point, not popped cleanly, and that tiny bend had been slowly killing the connection for weeks. She had probably been noticing shorter range and chalked it up to the battery she had already swapped.
I replaced the fob with a fresh unit, programmed it to the vehicle through the OBD port, and tested every button, both doors, and the remote functions before I handed it back to her. Then she started the car, pulled out of the space, and drove her father home in his own seat without transferring him into anything else.
Forty-eight minutes from her call to the engine running. The dealer route would have meant a tow, a wait, and a whole different day.
