A parent over in Marina Park, Ventura, called me on a Monday. She'd already called the Lexus dealer. They told her Thursday at the earliest, plus a tow-in since the LX wouldn't start. She had two kids bouncing between after-school activities and no backup car. Three days without the truck was not going to work.

The 2003 LX 470 uses the HYQ1512V remote head key with a Texas Instruments 4C transponder chip. No proximity system, no push-button start. It's an old-school chip-in-the-key setup running through Toyota's first-generation immobilizer, which Lexus branded as their own but the guts are identical. I connected my programmer to the OBD-II port, read the immobilizer ECU, registered the new 4C chip, cut the key by code using the lock cylinder data, and tested every function: start, remote lock, remote unlock, panic.

Whole thing took about 35 minutes on the hood of the truck.

She stood there watching, arms crossed, kids in the back seat playing on a tablet. When the engine turned over clean on the first try she just nodded, like that was the only acceptable outcome. Fair enough.
