2003 Lexus LX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and why does mine need programming?

A remote head key is an integrated unit where the key blade and the fob are built into a single piece, unlike a separate key fob on a keyring. Your 2003 LX uses this setup. Inside the head of the key is a transponder chip. When you turn the key, the ignition reads that chip and checks it against what the immobilizer has stored. If the chip is unrecognized, the engine won't run, even if the blade is cut perfectly.

Q: What tools do you actually use to program a key for this truck?

For a 2003 LX, the job involves a professional immobilizer programmer that communicates through the OBD port to register the new key's chip with the vehicle. On a truck this age, the process is well-documented and doesn't require factory security credentials or special portal access the way newer vehicles sometimes do. I also carry Lishi-style picks and decoders for non-destructive entry if the vehicle is locked and there's no working key.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I just program it myself at home?

Not on this one. The 2003 LX does not have a self-programming sequence for the transponder chip side of the key. Some older Toyota and Lexus vehicles have an onboard add-a-key procedure using the ignition, but that applies only under specific conditions and does not cover the chip enrollment needed here. The remote button side of the fob may have a standalone sequence, but that only handles the lock and unlock functions, not the transponder.

Q: My LX starts fine but the fob buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Probably not. If the engine starts, the transponder chip is working. The remote functions run on a separate circuit, and the most common reason they quit on a 2003 LX is a dead or poorly seated CR1616 battery. That specific cell is thinner than most, and if someone swapped in the wrong size at some point, the contact is inconsistent. Start there.

2003 Lexus LX Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Over at Ventura Harbor, a woman called on a Monday morning. Her 2003 Lexus LX had been sitting in the marina parking lot since the night before.

The fob had been acting up for a few weeks, range getting shorter, intermittent response on the lock button, and that morning it just stopped working entirely. She turned the key in the ignition and the engine started fine, so she knew the cut was okay. But the remote functions were dead and she was worried something bigger was wrong.

I drove out to the harbor and found the LX in the lot, salt air doing what salt air does near the water.

Opened the fob first. The CR1616 inside was so corroded around the contacts that it looked like it had been in there since the Clinton administration. Replaced the cell with the correct CR1616, cleaned both contact points, snapped it back together. Tested lock, unlock, and the third button. Everything came back immediately.

She laughed a little and said she had been about to call the dealer. I told her the dealer would have been happy to see her. She saved a good chunk by not going that route.

Not every call is a programming job. Sometimes the harbor air just wins, and the fix is a $3 battery and knowing which one to buy.

Lexus LX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

Three things to check before anyone touches your LX. First, look them up on the California BSIS website. Every legitimate locksmith company operating in this state carries a Bureau of Security and Investigative Services license, and the number should be something they give you without hesitating. Second, ask for a firm phone estimate for your specific year and model before they roll.
