I got a call from a guy parked near Blackstock, off the main stretch in Oxnard. He owned a 2016 Lexus LX and his story came out in pieces. A few weeks earlier he'd paid another locksmith to fix a fob that wasn't reliably starting the car. That tech showed up, did something with the fob, took his money, and left. The push-button start worked once or twice afterward, then went back to being unreliable. Some mornings it would catch on the second press. Other mornings he'd be standing there pressing the start button with the fob six inches away and nothing.

Then I connected my equipment to the OBD port and went through the key registration properly, full handshake with the vehicle security system, the way it's supposed to be done.
After that I walked every function. All four buttons. Touch sensors on both front handles. Push-button start from both seats. Held it there until I was confident it wasn't going to misbehave on him an hour later.
He said the dealer had quoted him significantly more than what he paid me, and that was before accounting for the tow they wanted him to arrange. He didn't mention that to complain. He mentioned it like it still surprised him, even after everything.
