Got a call from a guy near Camino Real Park in Ventura. His 2002 LX 470 wouldn't start in his driveway. Engine cranked strong, fuel pump primed, but it would turn over and die every time. Dash showed the security light blinking steady.
He'd already had a neighbor try jumping it. Swapped the battery. Even pulled the fuel pump relay and reseated it. All the right instincts, all the wrong diagnosis. The immobilizer was killing the injector pulse, not the electrical system.
I got there in about half an hour. His key was the original HYQ1512V, 89070-60081 stamped on the back, and it looked like it had seen every year of those twenty-plus. The plastic was cracked near the blade pivot and the transponder chip inside had shifted just enough to sit outside reliable read range from the coil antenna around the ignition cylinder.
I cut a new TOY40 blade, seated a fresh 4C chip in a solid aftermarket shell, and programmed it through the OBD port. Fired right up. Then I tested the lock, unlock, and panic buttons, swapped in a new CR1616, and let him cycle the ignition a few times to make sure the immobilizer was happy.
He said he'd been about to have it towed to the dealer. Would have been a long wait and a bigger bill for the same fix I did on his driveway.
