There is also an emergency metal blade folded inside the fob. That blade opens the door manually if the fob battery dies or the electronics fail. The blade itself does not start the car. That is handled by the transponder side of the fob, which can still be read by the vehicle even on a dead fob battery if you hold it directly against the start button.

When a fob gets physically damaged, the chip inside is sometimes still intact, but a cracked housing or broken contact can make the whole key unreliable. A full replacement is the safer call if the housing is compromised.

If holding the fob to the button does nothing, the problem may not be the battery. A reception module issue or a fob that has lost its registration would both produce the same warning. Some owners on LX forums have also found that the smart key reception function had been toggled off through a vehicle settings menu, and simply re-enabling it resolved the issue without replacing any hardware. Worth checking before assuming the key is dead.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I just program it myself?
