2005 Lexus LX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement key hold up on one of these?

The programming itself doesn't degrade or expire. A properly cut and programmed remote head key on the 2005 LX should work reliably for years. What actually wears out over time is the rubber button pad and, eventually, the battery. The CR1616 in this fob typically lasts a year to two years depending on how often the buttons get pressed. We install a fresh battery with every key we make, so you're starting at full charge from day one.

Q: What if the replacement key stops working a few weeks after I get it?

Call us. Every key we make is covered under our warranty and we'll come back out. That said, if a correctly programmed key on a 2005 LX suddenly stops responding, the first thing to check is whether it lost sync rather than lost programming entirely. A hard battery drain on the vehicle, or certain jump-start situations, can cause the fob to fall out of sync without erasing it from the system.

Q: Can I program a second key for the 2005 LX myself, or do I need a professional?

The 2005 LX does have an onboard add-a-key procedure that some owners have done themselves, as long as you already have one working key in hand. The sequence involves the ignition and a timed window to register the additional fob. It does not require a dealer or diagnostic equipment when a working key is present. All-keys-lost is a different situation.

Q: The fob range on my 2005 LX has gotten really short. Is the key going bad?

Usually it's the battery. Short range is one of the first signs a CR1616 is getting weak, well before the fob stops working entirely. Swap the battery first. If range is still poor after a fresh CR1616, check where you're standing when you press the button. The 2005 LX body is substantial and certain angles, especially near the rear corners, can cut range noticeably compared to being directly in front of or behind the vehicle.

2005 Lexus LX Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already in Ventura on a Saturday evening when the call came in from the College area. A couple had walked out to their 2005 LX in the parking lot and the remote head key wasn't responding to anything.

No lock, no unlock, nothing. They tried the buttons a few times, assumed the worst, and were about to start figuring out a ride home and leave the car until Monday.

One of them pulled out their phone and found me.

I was there in about twelve minutes. The remote head key on the 2005 LX is an all-in-one unit, the blade and the fob are the same piece, so when people panic about it not working they sometimes forget the blade still functions even if the remote is dead. I walked them through using the blade in the door while I pulled a fresh CR1616 from the van.

Swapped the battery, resynced the fob, and tested every button. Lock responded. Unlock responded. The third button cycled correctly. Then I started the vehicle to confirm the key was reading properly across the board.

They drove home that night instead of Monday morning. The dealer route would have meant towing it in, waiting for an appointment, and spending a lot more than they ended up spending with me. That part almost never comes up in conversation until after the job is done.

Lexus LX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys for the 2005 Lexus LX?▼

We use fresh, verified blanks built to OEM spec that match the factory FCC ID and frequency for this exact vehicle. The reason this matters on the 2005 LX specifically is that used OEM fobs pulled from other vehicles are often already locked to that previous car and cannot be transferred. More than one LX owner has bought a used fob online, paid a locksmith to program it, and found out it simply won't register.
