Got a call on a Sunday morning from a guy in Grant Park, Ventura. His 1997 C280 was sitting in the driveway with the steering lock engaged and no response from the ignition at all. He turned the key, nothing happened. No crank, no dash lights tied to the immobilizer release, just a locked column.

I got there and pulled the EIS unit from the steering column. On the W202, it is the round module the key slides into, sometimes called the ignition switch module, part number 210 545 00 08 on a lot of these. Opened it up on his kitchen table. The infrared receiver window on the module had a film of dust and grime built up over 27 years. Cleaned it, checked the internal contacts, and put it back in.
Both keys fired the car right up. He just stood there holding his spare like he did not trust it yet.
The dealer had already told him they would need to order parts and it would be a multi-day job. He got it handled same-day for a fraction of what they quoted.
