Got a call from a guy over in the Montalvo neighborhood in Ventura. His 2013 C250 would not start. Turned the key, dash lit up with "Key not recognized," steering column stayed locked, and the engine did nothing. He had already swapped the CR2025 in his SmartKey, tried his spare key, same result. Dealer told him to tow it in and quoted a multi-week wait just for diagnostics.
I pulled up, popped the lower dash panel, and connected to the EIS through OBD. Read the module and confirmed it was a NEC-based EIS, which is the more common board on these W204s. The processor was still communicating, but the key data had corrupted in one of the eight key slots. That happens on FBS3. The EIS stores key profiles internally, and when a slot goes bad it can reject keys that are physically fine.
Pulled the EIS to bench, refreshed the key data, re-paired both of his original SmartKeys to clean slots. Tested the IR window on each key with a phone camera to confirm the infrared was transmitting. Put everything back, and the car fired right up.
He sat in the driver seat for a second and just held the steering wheel like he was making sure it was real. Two weeks of no car, fixed in about an hour at his curb. He still had both original keys. Just needed someone who knew where the actual problem was.
