Got a call from someone out at the Camarillo Premium Outlets on a Saturday afternoon. She had a 2009 C300, parked near the food court end, and the key just stopped turning in the EIS. Wouldn't rotate past position zero. No dash lights, no crank, nothing.
She had already called the Mercedes dealer. They told her it would need a tow in, a possible EIS replacement, and she probably wouldn't get it back until midweek. She was from out of town. That was not going to work.
I got there and pulled the chrome SmartKey apart on my bench pad. The CR2025 was original, completely flat. The infrared emitter window had a tiny film of lotion or sunscreen on it, just enough to block the IR signal that tells the EIS to unlock the steering column. Cleaned the window, dropped in a fresh CR2025, made sure the battery tabs had solid contact.
Key went in. Turned clean. Dash lit up, engine fired on the first try.
I stood there and cycled it three more times because on these W204s, an intermittent EIS will sometimes let you turn it once and then lock up again. All three starts were smooth. Tested every button on the remote, trunk, lock, unlock, panic. Everything responded.
She did not need a new EIS. She did not need a tow. She needed fifteen minutes and someone who knew where to look first.
