Got a call from a guy in the East Ventura neighborhood in Ventura. His 2014 C250 had one key left, and the chrome side trim on the fob was cracked and peeling. He said the battery door kept popping open in his pocket, the CR2025 would shift, and the car would throw "Key not recognized" on the dash. He had been holding the fob right against the steering column to get it to start. That is a textbook weak IR signal.
He had already called the dealer. They told him two to three weeks for a replacement key to come in, and he would need to tow the car there if it quit on him before then.
I showed up with a blank IYZ-3312 fob, cut the HU64 blade on site with a laser cutter, and programmed the new key's IR transponder through the OBD port using his working key as the donor. Whole thing took about 20 minutes. Then I tested both keys on all four buttons, start, lock, unlock, trunk, and verified the immobilizer accepted each one clean.
He flipped the new key over in his hand a couple times like he was checking if it was real. Then he looked at his old cracked fob and just said, "So I don't need this one anymore?"
I told him to keep it as a backup. A spare in a drawer beats no spare at all. He paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted and drove off the same afternoon.
