Got a call from someone parked near the Commemorative Air Force Museum in Camarillo. His 2000 C-Class wouldn't turn over. Key went into the EIS, turned, nothing. No crank, no dash lights flickering, just dead response from the ignition.
He told me he'd already called a dealer. They wanted him to tow it in, leave it for two to three days, and they'd "diagnose from there." He wasn't doing that.
I got on site and pulled the key apart on his trunk lid. The IR emitter looked fine, CR2025 had juice, buttons worked. So I connected to the EIS through the OBD port with the VVDI MB tool and read the module. The NEC chip inside the EIS still recognized his key token. No corruption. Good sign.
Then I checked the ESL. That was the problem. The electronic steering lock motor had seized, which kills the start signal even though the key and EIS are talking fine. This is one of the most common W202 and W203 failures that gets misdiagnosed as a bad key. Forums on MBWorld are full of owners who replaced keys for nothing when the ESL was the actual culprit.
I repaired the ESL on site, tested the start cycle five times in a row, confirmed the steering lock was releasing clean each time. He just sat in the driver's seat turning it on and off like he was making sure it wasn't a fluke.
Whole thing took about 40 minutes. No tow truck, no multi-day wait at the dealer.
