Got a call from someone at the Crossroads Shopping Center in Camarillo. She had a 2005 C230, W203 body, and the key just stopped turning the ignition. Not stuck, not binding on the steering column lock. The EIS was not recognizing the transponder at all. Dash said "Insert Key" even though the key was already in.
She had already called the dealer. They told her to tow it in, leave it, and they would diagnose it. Estimated three to five business days before she would even get a call back with a quote.
I got there in about twenty minutes. Plugged into the OBD port and pulled the EIS data. The module was reading fine, just had zero keys registered to it. Her battery had died two weeks earlier. Someone jumped it, and at some point the key memory in the EIS got corrupted. Classic W203 issue. Forums on MBWorld are full of this exact scenario, especially post-jump.
Reprogrammed the original key's infrared and transponder back into the EIS, tested the four-button remote (lock, unlock, trunk, panic), cycled the steering lock twice, and let it sit for a few minutes to make sure the NEC chip on the EIS board held the write.
She sat on a bench near the shopping center entrance the whole time, scrolling her phone. When I handed the key back and it fired right up, she just nodded like she had been holding her breath for two weeks. Whole thing took about thirty minutes, right there in the parking lot, for a fraction of what the dealer route would have cost.
