Got a call from a guy stuck near San Buenaventura State Beach in Ventura. His 1998 C280 had one working key left and the buttons on it had gone completely dead. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, nothing. He had been locking the car manually with the key blade for about two weeks, just living with it.
When I got there he was sitting on a bench near the parking area, holding the key like it owed him money. I popped the key head open on the hood. The CR2025 was so corroded it had actually started to eat into one of the battery contacts on the board. The 5WK47283 remote module was still alive, but barely.
Cleaned the contact, dropped in a fresh CR2025, and tested the IR signal with my receiver. All four buttons came back. Then I cut him a spare on the HU64 blank, programmed the ID44 transponder through the OBD-II port using the EIS adaptation channel, and registered the new remote. Whole thing took maybe 35 minutes.
He asked how long the dealer quoted him. I told him what I hear from most Mercedes owners: three to five business days and a number that makes you rethink car ownership. He just nodded.
Two working keys now. Both tested on every door, the trunk, and a full start cycle. He drove off and I packed up.
