Saturday morning, maybe 7:15, I got a call from someone near the Ventura Boulevard shopping area in Camarillo. Her 2004 C240 would not turn over. Key went into the EIS, turned to position two, and nothing. Dash lit up with "Key not recognized" and just sat there.
She had already called the dealer Friday afternoon. They told her earliest appointment was Tuesday, and she would need the car towed in. That was the end of that conversation for her.
I got there in about 20 minutes. Pulled her SmartKey apart on the hood. The CR2025 was original, which on a 2004 means it had been dead for years. The IR emitter lens had a film of grime on it. Cleaned the lens, dropped in a fresh CR2025, and tried the key in the EIS. Still nothing.
So I went to the EIS module. Connected my IR programmer, read the NEC chip, and found only one key slot was active but the data was partially corrupt. Re-wrote the key data to that slot, verified the IR handshake, and tested.
Key turned. Engine started. She just sat in the driver seat for a second with her hands on the wheel, not going anywhere, like she was making sure the car agreed.
One visit, Saturday morning, done before most shops even open their doors. She kept her Tuesday appointment canceled.
