Got a call from a guy near Moorpark College in Moorpark. His 1998 E320 had one working key left, and the remote buttons had gone completely dead on it. He was locking the doors with the physical key turn every time, which on the W210 means walking around to check each door because the vacuum lock system on these cars is its own animal.
He told me he already ordered a battery. Put a fresh CR2025 in. Nothing. Buttons still dead. He figured the whole key was toast.
I got out there in about twenty minutes. Popped the key open on my tailgate and the issue was obvious. The infrared LED on the circuit board was cloudy and one of the battery terminal clips had corroded green. The IR signal on these W210 keys is line-of-sight to a receiver near the rearview mirror, so any weak signal just dies. Cleaned the contacts, swapped in a known-good CR2025, and tested with my IR camera to confirm the LED was actually firing.
Remote came back on every button. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Then I tested the mechanical start and let the EIS read the transponder a few times to make sure that side was solid too.
He had been two days away from ordering a whole new key from the dealer and waiting a week or more for them to order and program it. Didn't need any of that.
