Got a call from a guy in Springville Park, Camarillo. His 2012 E350 wouldn't turn over. Dash just showed "Key Not Recognized" and sat there.
He told me on the phone the key had fallen off a counter onto tile floor a few days back. Worked fine after that, then started getting intermittent no-starts. I pulled up and checked the key first. The housing on the 5WK47283 had a hairline crack along the seam near the battery door. When I opened it, the infrared board had shifted just enough that the IR emitter was misaligned with its window in the blade housing. The NEC chip was fine. The CR2025 tested at 2.9 volts, plenty of life.
I transplanted the full board assembly into a new housing, recut the HU64 blade by decoding his door cylinder right there, and tested the infrared handshake with the EIS module. All four buttons worked. Remote lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Clean start on the first turn.
He stood there watching me work on the hood of his car for about twenty minutes. When it fired up, he just nodded slowly, like he was doing math on the two weeks and the tow bill he almost paid.
Whole thing done on site in Springville Park for a fraction of what the dealer route would have cost.
