Got a call from someone out near Underwood Family Farms in Moorpark. His 1999 E320 key had snapped right at the neck where the HU64 blade meets the plastic head. Half the blade was still jammed in the EIS cylinder. He had already called the dealer and they told him to tow it in, quoted him a wait time measured in days, not hours.
I got out there and pulled the broken blade section from the ignition slot. Clean extraction, no damage to the wafers inside the EIS. The chrome shell on these W210 keys gets brittle over time. The casting around the flip hinge or the blade root just gives up one day, usually when it is cold or the driver torques it sideways out of habit.
His electronics were fine. The IR board, the NEC chip on the little green PCB, all still working. I moved the guts into a fresh shell, cut a new HU64 blade decoded off the old broken piece and verified against the door lock, then tested the remote range on all four buttons. Locks, unlock, trunk, panic.
He sat on the tailgate of his truck watching the whole thing. When I handed him the key and he started it up, he just nodded. That was it. No tow truck, no loaner car, no week without his car. Just a working key, done on site, for a fraction of what the dealer wanted for parts alone.
