Got a call from a guy off Telephone Road in Ventura, near the commercial stretch by the auto parts stores. His 2008 E350 would not turn on. Both keys dead, dashboard dark when he inserted either one. He had already replaced the CR2025 batteries in both fobs that morning. No change.
I pulled up and started with the basics. Tested infrared output on both IYZ-3312 remotes using a phone camera. Both were firing. That told me the keys were alive and transmitting, which meant the EIS was either not receiving or not responding.
Hooked up to the OBD port and pulled the EIS. The NEC chip inside the A211 545 series module had lost its key data. This is a known W211 issue. The NEC MCU on the EIS board can corrupt its EEPROM, and once that happens it stops recognizing every key you own. Forums are full of owners describing the same dead dash, same panic.
I read the EIS, rebuilt the key data, and re-synced both of his original fobs on site. Whole thing took about an hour on the hood of his car in that parking lot. He sat on a bench and watched.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him two weeks of wait time and wanted the car towed in. He drove home instead.
