Got a call from a guy near Surfers Point in Ventura. His 2004 E320 had one working key left and the lock button had stopped responding weeks ago. He'd been locking the car by holding the key against the door handle and walking away, relying on the passive entry to do the work. Then even that quit.
When I got there, he handed me the key and I could tell the CR2025 was original. Not aftermarket, not recently swapped. Original. The contacts inside had a thin green film on them. The infrared emitter in the key head was basically shouting into a wall.
I cleaned the contacts, dropped in a fresh CR2025, and tested IR output with my receiver. Strong signal. But the key still only locked, wouldn't unlock. That's a known behavior on these when the EIS (part number 211 545 23 08 on his build) has dropped a key slot from its memory. Happens after a long period of degraded communication between the key and the module.
I connected to the EIS through the OBD port, re-synced the key's transponder and IR remote functions, and tested every button. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. All four responding through the windshield from about 30 feet out.
He said he'd been planning to take it to the dealer. They'd quoted him a multi-day wait and wanted him to leave the car there. I was done in about 25 minutes, standing in a parking lot.
